How this is calculated:

Note: Schools and colleges don't all use the same GPA system. This calculator uses a clear, standard 4.0/weighted model to approximate your GPA. Your official GPA on a transcript may look different because each district and university can use its own scale, weighting rules, and which courses/semesters they include.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won't this always match my school's GPA exactly?

There is no single national GPA standard. Each high school or district can define its own grading scale (how letters or percentages convert to points), how much extra weight AP/Honors/IB/Dual Credit courses get, and how many years/semesters count in the official GPA. Some districts even use internal "numerical" GPAs that don't look like a 0–4 or 0–5 scale at all, then convert those numbers back into a "4.0 scale" for transcripts and class rank.

Colleges often recalculate GPAs again using their own rules so they can compare students from different schools fairly.

This calculator uses a consistent, transparent 4.0/weighted model to give you a close approximation of your GPA and to help you plan. It's great for understanding where you stand, but it might not match your school or a college's official number exactly. Always rely on your official transcript or registrar for the GPA that "counts" for graduation, rank, or admissions.

About this Calculator

This universal GPA calculator supports multiple grading systems including standard 4.0 scales, weighted scales with honors/AP/IB courses, percentage-based systems, and fully custom configurations. It can handle both high school calculations (where each course has equal weight) and college calculations (where courses are weighted by credit hours).

The what-if planner helps you determine what grades you need in future courses to reach your target GPA. All calculations are performed locally in your browser—no data is sent to any server.
